Cypress buprestid

Trachykele blondeli

Description

The cypress buprestid (Trachykele blondeli) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Buprestidae within the order Coleoptera. It is recognized as a significant pest of coniferous trees, causing substantial damage to both forest ecosystems and ornamental nursery stock through its cryptic larval stage.

This insect primarily infests members of the Cupressaceae family, including cypress, arborvitae (Thuja), and juniper trees. It is particularly drawn to trees that are already suffering from environmental stress, drought, or poor soil conditions, though it can also colonize apparently healthy trees.

The life cycle of the cypress buprestid is complex and typically spans multiple years. Adult beetles deposit eggs in bark crevices, and the emerging larvae bore into the inner bark and sapwood. This internal feeding creates extensive, irregular galleries that disrupt the vascular systems of the host tree, making detection during the early stages of infestation very difficult.

Damage symptoms manifest as the yellowing and subsequent death of individual branches, eventually spreading to the entire crown. As the larvae consume the conductive tissues, the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients is severely compromised, which often leads to the decline and death of the tree if the infestation is not managed effectively.

Control strategies for the cypress buprestid include a mix of cultural and chemical interventions. Regular inspection and the prompt removal and destruction of infested wood are essential to reduce the population. Chemical control involves applying systemic insecticides during the peak adult flight periods. Key strategies for management include:

  • Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches.
  • Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization.
  • Monitoring for adult beetle emergence in late spring.
  • Applying preventative insecticide treatments to high-value ornamental trees.
