Trachykele hartmanni is a species of metallic wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Buprestidae. As an agricultural and forestry pest, it is specifically known for targeting coniferous trees, often causing significant damage to nursery stock and landscape plantings by burrowing into the host wood.

Taxonomically, this insect is classified within the order Coleoptera. Like other members of the Buprestidae family, adult beetles possess a distinct metallic appearance. However, the larvae are the primary cause of damage, as they reside within the vascular tissue and heartwood of the host plant, effectively creating galleries that disrupt nutrient transport.

The beetle primarily attacks members of the Cupressaceae family. Arborvitae (Thuja) and various cypress species are the most common hosts. The larval feeding galleries weaken the structural integrity of the branches and can eventually lead to the death of the tree if the infestation is severe and left untreated.

The life cycle of this pest is complex, often spanning multiple years depending on environmental conditions. Adult females deposit eggs into bark crevices, where larvae emerge and immediately bore into the tree. Because the larval stage is completed internally, monitoring and chemical control are significantly challenged, emphasizing the importance of early detection.
