Cypress buprestid

Trachykele leconti

Description

The cypress buprestid (Trachykele leconti) is a wood-boring beetle belonging to the family Buprestidae (order Coleoptera). This species is a significant pest primarily known for attacking coniferous trees, causing extensive damage to their vascular systems and overall structural integrity.

The primary hosts of this pest include various species of the Cupressaceae family, such as cypress (Cupressus), juniper (Juniperus), and arborvitae (Thuja). While the beetles often target trees already stressed by drought or poor environmental conditions, large populations can attack healthy trees, leading to rapid decline.

The life cycle of Trachykele leconti involves larvae tunneling through the cambium layer and the sapwood of the host plant. The female beetle lays eggs in bark crevices, and upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the tree. These galleries disrupt the flow of water and nutrients, effectively girdling the tree from the inside.

Visible symptoms of infestation include the gradual yellowing and browning of needles, dieback of branches, and the appearance of characteristic oval-shaped exit holes on the bark once the adult beetles emerge. Infested trees typically show signs of thinning crowns and, if left untreated, may succumb to the infestation within a few seasons.

Effective management requires a proactive approach centered on sanitation and preventive care. Key strategies include:

  • Prompt removal and destruction of infested branches or entire trees to prevent further spread.
  • Maintaining tree health with proper irrigation and fertilization to help the host plant resist attacks.
  • Applying systemic insecticides specifically labeled for wood-boring pests during the peak activity period of adult beetles.
Regular monitoring during the growing season is essential for the early detection of the pest, as established populations are significantly harder to control once they have bored deeply into the heartwood.
