Systematic position: The cypress buprestid (Trachykele opulenta) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Buprestidae. These metallic wood-boring beetles are significant pests, particularly in North American forests and ornamental nurseries, where they specialize in attacking various coniferous tree species within the Cupressaceae family.

Host plants: The primary hosts for this pest include species within the genera Thuja (arborvitae), Cupressus (cypress), Juniperus (juniper), and Chamaecyparis (false cypress). While they often target stressed or weakened trees, high populations of the beetle can successfully attack and kill otherwise healthy, mature specimens.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Trachykele opulenta can span multiple years depending on environmental conditions. Adult beetles emerge in the spring or summer to mate and lay eggs in bark crevices. The larvae bore into the bark and eventually penetrate deep into the phloem and xylem, creating extensive galleries that disrupt the tree's internal circulation system.

Damage and economic impact: The damage caused by the larvae is severe. By excavating tunnels throughout the sapwood and heartwood, they physically damage the vascular tissue, leading to flagging of branches, crown dieback, and eventually the death of the tree. This impact is particularly devastating for high-value ornamental landscapes and forest nurseries.

Management strategies: Controlling this pest is challenging due to the larvae's protected status inside the wood. Management must focus on integrated pest management (IPM) techniques.
