Taxonomic position: Trialeurodes abutiloneus, commonly known as the bandedwinged whitefly, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. It is a highly adaptable insect that has gained economic importance in various agricultural regions due to its ability to colonize a wide range of host plants in both field and greenhouse settings.

Host range: This pest is a polyphagous insect that attacks numerous crop species. It is particularly notorious for damaging members of the Solanaceae family, including tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants, as well as the Malvaceae family, such as cotton. It also utilizes several weed species, most notably velvetleaf, as a primary refuge for population buildup.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of the bandedwinged whitefly progresses through egg, three larval instars, a pupal stage, and the adult phase. Females typically oviposit on the underside of leaves. The duration of the life cycle is highly temperature-dependent, with warmer climates significantly accelerating development, allowing for multiple overlapping generations per year.

Damage and economic impact: The primary injury is caused by nymphs and adults feeding on plant sap, which leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and leaf shedding. The excretion of honeydew is a significant secondary issue, as it promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks photosynthesis and significantly reduces the market value and physical quality of the affected crops.

Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this whitefly species. Essential strategies include:
