Strawberry whitefly

The strawberry whitefly (Trialeurodes packardi) is an insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. It is recognized as a persistent pest of strawberry plantations, capable of causing significant economic losses if not monitored and managed properly during the active growing season.

The primary host for this pest is the cultivated strawberry. While it exhibits a preference for this crop, it can also infest various wild plants within the Rosaceae family. Managing wild weeds around the field perimeter is an essential part of an integrated pest management strategy to prevent recurring infestations.

The life cycle of Trialeurodes packardi follows a gradual metamorphosis, progressing through the egg, larval stages (often called nymphs), puparium, and adult stages. The adults are tiny, moth-like insects that thrive in warm, sheltered environments, often preferring the undersides of leaves where they lay their eggs in protected clusters.

Damage caused by this pest is twofold. Primarily, the larvae pierce leaf tissues to consume phloem sap, leading to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and general plant stress. Secondarily, the production of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and reduces the marketability of the strawberry fruit.

To effectively protect crops, growers should implement the following management practices:

• Early detection through the use of yellow sticky traps placed throughout the field.
• Sanitation efforts, including the removal and disposal of heavily infested plant debris.
• Biological control using natural predators such as parasitic wasps or ladybird beetles.
• Strategic application of systemic insecticides, ensuring compliance with pre-harvest intervals.
