Pergande whitefly

The Pergande whitefly (Trialeurodes pergandei) is a member of the Aleyrodidae family within the order Hemiptera. This insect is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that targets various plant species, particularly within greenhouse environments where conditions facilitate rapid population growth.

The host range of this pest primarily includes members of the Solanaceae and Fabaceae families. By colonizing the undersides of leaves, the Pergande whitefly efficiently extracts plant sap, causing systemic weakness to the host plant. Its ability to proliferate quickly makes it a persistent challenge for commercial growers.

The life cycle follows a hemimetabolous pattern including eggs, three nymphal instars, a pupal stage, and the adult stage. The adult females lay eggs on the abaxial leaf surfaces. The developmental rate is highly sensitive to ambient temperature, with warmer conditions significantly accelerating the transition through generations throughout the growing season.

Damage caused by this whitefly is characterized by plant chlorosis, stunting, and reduced yield. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthetic activity and degrades the market quality of the produce. Severe infestations can result in complete leaf senescence and plant death.

Integrated pest management strategies include:

• Deployment of yellow sticky traps to detect and monitor population levels.
• Introduction of biological control agents, such as parasitoid wasps (Encarsia spp.).
