This pest is recognized for its ability to impact various agricultural and ornamental crops, often becoming a significant economic concern in protected cultivation environments where ecological conditions favour its rapid multiplication.

The host range of Trialeurodes rara is extensive, encompassing many horticultural crops including vegetables and greenhouse flowers. By clustering on the abaxial leaf surfaces, the insects extract essential phloem sap, which directly impacts the plant's metabolic processes and overall vigor during the active growing season.

The life cycle involves several distinct stages: egg, three larval instars, puparium, and adult. The adults are highly mobile and easily distributed through air currents or human activity, while the larval stages are stationary and remain fixed to the host tissue. This developmental strategy ensures the species can persist within sheltered environments throughout the year.

The damage caused by these pests is twofold: direct feeding results in chlorosis and stunted growth, while the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold. This fungus interferes with photosynthesis and lowers the aesthetic and market value of the produce. Furthermore, the insect acts as a vector for various plant viruses, posing a systemic risk to greenhouse health.
