Systematic position: The castor whitefly (Trialeurodes ricini) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. This small sap-sucking insect is a significant pest that thrives in warm climates and can cause substantial economic losses in various agricultural sectors.

Host plants: This species is known as a polyphagous pest. As the name suggests, it primarily affects castor bean (Ricinus communis) plants. However, it also attacks a wide range of economically important crops including cotton, various solanaceous crops like tomatoes and eggplants, as well as legumes and cucurbits.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle progresses through the stages of egg, nymph (three instars), puparium, and adult. Eggs are typically laid on the underside of leaves. The duration of the life cycle is highly temperature-dependent, with warmer conditions significantly shortening the development time and leading to multiple overlapping generations within a single growing season.

Nature of damage and pest status: Both nymphs and adults feed by extracting plant sap. The resulting damage includes leaf yellowing, stunting, and premature senescence. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which inhibits photosynthesis, disfigures the foliage, and reduces the overall marketability and yield of the harvest.

Management practices: Effective management of Trialeurodes ricini requires an integrated approach. Key strategies include:
