Systematic position: The hairy snail (Trichia hispida) is a species of small, air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Hygromiidae. It is known for the fine, hair-like structures on its shell, which are typically more prominent in younger specimens and help in retaining moisture.
Biology and life cycle: This snail thrives in moist, shaded environments such as forest litter, gardens, and vegetable patches. Being hermaphroditic, they can reproduce rapidly under favourable conditions. Eggs are laid in clusters in damp soil, where they hatch into juveniles that immediately begin feeding on decomposing organic matter and soft plant tissues.
Damage patterns and harmfulness: The damage is caused by the snails scraping the epidermis and chewing irregular holes in the leaves of host plants. Their activity is marked by conspicuous slime trails, which can also carry plant pathogens. Severe infestations often result in significant aesthetic and physiological damage, especially to tender seedlings and leaves.
Affected crops: The hairy snail is a polyphagous pest, meaning it feeds on a wide range of plants. It commonly affects vegetable crops such as lettuce, cabbage, and beans. Additionally, it causes damage to ornamental flowers and berries, particularly in nursery settings where humidity levels are kept consistently high for plant growth.
Protection measures: Effective control involves a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Keeping garden beds free of weeds and debris eliminates their primary hiding spots. Barriers such as crushed eggshells or sand can discourage movement, while chemical molluscicides containing metaldehyde can be used as a last resort in strictly controlled applications to minimize impact on beneficial organisms.
