Description

Trichodorus is a genus of free-living soil nematodes belonging to the order Dorylaimida and the family Trichodoridae. Often referred to as stubby-root nematodes, these organisms live in the soil environment and feed on the root tips of plants using a specialized feeding apparatus known as an onchiostyle.

These nematodes cause significant damage to a wide range of crops, including potatoes, sugar beets, onions, and various ornamental plants. They are primarily found in light-textured soils, such as sandy and sandy loam soils, where their mobility is significantly higher compared to heavier clay soils.

The life cycle of Trichodorus involves several stages, including eggs, larvae, and adults, all occurring within the soil. They are ectoparasites, meaning they do not enter the root tissue but rather feed from the outside. Environmental conditions like soil moisture and temperature are critical factors influencing their feeding activity and reproductive rate throughout the growing season.

Damage is characterized by stunted root systems, which often appear thickened or stubby due to the inhibition of root elongation. However, their primary economic importance lies in their ability to act as vectors for tobacco rattle virus (TRV). The resulting virus infection causes "spraing" or internal necrotic lesions in potato tubers, rendering them unsalable.
