Description

Trichodorus cedarus is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Triplonchida and the family Trichodoridae. As an ectoparasite, this organism lives in the soil and feeds on the root tips of various plants, including horticultural crops and trees. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest due to its impact on root development and its ability to transmit plant viruses.

The host range of Trichodorus cedarus includes many economically important species. By feeding on the meristematic tissues of roots, the nematode causes physiological disruption. This feeding behavior results in stunted primary roots and an excessive proliferation of lateral roots, often referred to as the "stubby root" symptom, which severely compromises the plant's nutrient and water uptake capacity.

The life cycle of this nematode involves an egg stage, four juvenile stages, and an adult stage. They are highly mobile in moist soil conditions, actively seeking root zones. The entire development cycle is completed within the soil profile, where the nematodes remain in close proximity to the root system, ensuring a constant supply of food and a stable environment for reproduction throughout the growing season.

Damage caused by Trichodorus cedarus is characterized not only by direct tissue injury but also by the transmission of tobraviruses, such as Tobacco Rattle Virus (TRV). These infections lead to necrosis and malformations, significantly reducing crop vigor and quality. In fields with high nematode populations, uneven plant growth and reduced yield are the most common field observations, which often mislead growers into suspecting nutritional deficiencies.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for mitigating the impact of Trichodorus cedarus:
