Trichodorus cylindricus is a soil-dwelling nematode belonging to the order Triplonchida and the family Trichodoridae. Known commonly as a type of "stubby root nematode," this organism acts as an ectoparasite, feeding on the root tips of plants and causing significant physiological stress to the host.
The host range of Trichodorus cylindricus is quite broad, including economically important crops such as potatoes, sugar beets, onions, and various horticultural species. These nematodes thrive in light, sandy soils where the pore spaces allow for easier migration and access to the delicate root systems of young plants.
The life cycle is completed entirely within the soil. Adult females deposit eggs near the host roots. Upon hatching, the juvenile stages immediately begin feeding on root cells. This feeding process involves injecting enzymatic secretions into the plant tissue, which causes immediate growth inhibition and the characteristic "stubby" appearance of the root system.
The primary agricultural threat posed by this species is its role as a vector for the Tobacco Rattle Virus (TRV). The virus causes internal brown spotting (spraing) in potato tubers, significantly reducing their marketable value. Preventing the spread of these nematodes is essential to maintaining the quality of tuber and root vegetable harvests.
Effective management strategies rely on a combination of cultural and chemical practices. Growers should implement extended crop rotations, incorporate green manure crops that suppress nematode populations, and ensure optimal soil moisture management. When populations reach economic thresholds, the application of specific nematicides may be required prior to planting to minimize early-season damage.
