Stubby root nematode

Taxonomy. The stubby root nematode (Trichodorus obscurus) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, order Dorylaimida, and family Trichodoridae. It is a highly mobile, microscopic ectoparasitic nematode that lives in the soil and feeds on the tips of plant roots, often causing severe physiological stress to the host.

Host plants. This species is a polyphagous pest with a broad host range. It frequently infests economically important crops, including potatoes, sugar beets, cereals, carrots, and various legumes. They are particularly prevalent in light-textured, sandy soils, which facilitate their movement and feeding activities.

Biology and life cycle. The nematode completes its entire life cycle within the soil profile. Both juveniles and adults utilize a specialized feeding apparatus to extract fluids from root cells. Their development is significantly influenced by soil moisture and temperature, with optimal conditions leading to rapid population growth and intense feeding pressure on developing root tips.

Symptoms and damage. The primary manifestation of damage is the "stubby root" syndrome, where the root tips become blunted, stunted, and necrotic, leading to a poorly developed root system. This reduction in root mass prevents the plant from absorbing sufficient nutrients and water. Furthermore, Trichodorus obscurus is a well-known vector for the tobacco rattle virus (TRV).

Management strategies. Controlling this pest requires a combination of chemical and cultural methods:

• Utilizing crop rotation with non-host plant species to starve the nematode population.
• Implementing rigorous weed control to eliminate virus reservoirs and alternate hosts.
• Applying soil fumigants or nematicides in fields with high infestation levels.
• Promoting healthy soil structure and fertility to help plants tolerate nematode feeding.
• Monitoring fields using soil sampling and laboratory analysis to assess nematode density.
