Description
Systematic position: Trichodorus obtusus belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Enoplea, order Triplonchida, and family Trichodoridae. These organisms are classified as ectoparasitic nematodes because they reside in the soil and feed on the root tips of plants from the exterior without embedding themselves into the tissue.
Host plants: This nematode is a polyphagous pest, meaning it attacks a wide variety of cultivated and wild plants. Key agricultural crops susceptible to its damage include potatoes, sugar beets, cereals, and various vegetable species. Due to their wide host range, they can persist in the soil for extended periods.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Trichodorus obtusus is entirely soil-borne. These nematodes thrive in moist, porous soil conditions, which facilitate their movement toward the roots of host plants. The cycle consists of eggs, four larval stages, and adults. Environmental factors like soil temperature, moisture levels, and texture significantly influence their reproductive rate and seasonal activity.
