Trichodorus primitivus is a soil-dwelling nematode belonging to the Phylum Nematoda, Class Enoplea, Order Triplonchida, and the Family Trichodoridae. These nematodes are widely known as stubby root nematodes. Unlike endoparasitic species, they live in the soil and feed externally on the roots of plants by penetrating cells with their onchiostyle, a specialized feeding tube.

Host Range and Economic Impact
This pest has an extensive host range, attacking various agricultural and horticultural crops such as potatoes, sugar beets, cereals, and numerous vegetables. The most significant economic threat posed by Trichodorus primitivus is its role as a vector for the Tobacco Rattle Virus (TRV). This virus causes "spraing" or necrotic spots in potato tubers, significantly reducing their commercial value.

Biology and Life Cycle
The life cycle of these nematodes takes place entirely within the soil. They thrive in light-textured, sandy soils with sufficient moisture levels. The development cycle progresses through the egg stage, four larval stages, and the adult stage. Because they do not form survival cysts, their population density is highly dependent on the continuous availability of host plant roots and favorable soil conditions.

Nature of Damage
Feeding by Trichodorus primitivus causes the characteristic "stubby root" symptoms, where root tips become damaged, thickened, and stunted. This prevents the plant from absorbing water and nutrients effectively, leading to patches of poor, stunted growth in the field. When the nematode transmits TRV, plants show systemic symptoms such as foliage mottling, necrosis, and reduced vigor, often resulting in severe yield losses.
