Description
Taxonomic classification. Trichodorus proximus is a member of the phylum Nematoda, class Enoplea, order Triplonchida, and family Trichodoridae. These organisms are microscopic soil-dwelling worms characterized by a specialized feeding structure known as an onchiostyle, which is used to puncture and extract contents from root cells.
Host range and damage symptoms. This species acts as an ectoparasite, feeding externally on the roots of various crops, including potatoes, tomatoes, and ornamental plants. Feeding damage often results in the "stubby root" syndrome, where roots appear stunted, thickened, and lack sufficient lateral development, causing the plant to struggle with nutrient and water uptake.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Trichodorus proximus occurs entirely within the soil. They are highly dependent on soil moisture and oxygen levels, typically thriving in sandy soils. Development progresses through several larval stages, all of which are capable of feeding on plant roots. Environmental factors, particularly soil temperature, play a crucial role in their activity and reproductive rates.
Economic importance. The primary economic impact of this nematode is twofold. First, it causes direct yield reduction through root system impairment. Second, and arguably more dangerous, it acts as an efficient vector for soil-borne plant viruses, such as Tobacco Rattle Virus (TRV). The presence of this nematode can cause severe quality degradation, making harvested produce unsuitable for market.
Management and protection. Controlling Trichodorus proximus requires an integrated approach because soil-borne populations are difficult to eradicate completely. Recommended strategies include:
- Soil testing to determine nematode population density before planting.
- Implementation of crop rotation using non-host or antagonistic cover crops.
- Application of chemical nematicides in high-risk areas.
- Maintenance of soil health through balanced fertilization and organic matter management to promote beneficial soil microbes.
