Description
Systematic position: Trichodorus similis belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Enoplea, order Triplonchida, and family Trichodoridae. It is a free-living, soil-inhabiting ectoparasitic nematode known for feeding on the root tips of a wide range of host plants.
Host crops: This species is a polyphagous pest with a broad host range. It significantly affects potatoes, sugar beets, cereals, various vegetables, and ornamental plants. The nematode thrives best in light, sandy soils that allow for easy movement of the organisms within the soil pores.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Trichodorus similis involves an egg stage, four larval stages, and an adult stage. All stages, except for the eggs, are capable of feeding on roots using their specialized stylet. Reproduction is sexual. They are highly dependent on soil moisture and can propagate rapidly in well-aerated, moist soil environments.
Nature of damage: By feeding on root tips, the nematode causes necrosis and inhibits root elongation, often resulting in a stunted, stubby, and branched root system. Beyond direct feeding damage, Trichodorus similis acts as a vector for the Tobacco Rattle Virus (TRV), which is responsible for the destructive 'spraing' or corky ringspot disease in potatoes.
Management strategies: Controlling this nematode is challenging and requires integrated pest management (IPM):
- Crop rotation with non-host or antagonistic cover crops to reduce nematode populations.
- Strict weed control to eliminate reservoirs of the Tobacco Rattle Virus.
- Application of soil nematicides in high-risk areas prior to planting.
- Usage of virus-free seed tubers and selection of resistant potato cultivars to mitigate viral impact.
