Biology and life cycle. These bees form large perennial colonies in cavities, such as hollow trees or even man-made structures. The life cycle follows a holometabolous development pattern: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The queen is responsible for continuous egg-laying throughout the year. The workers are highly aggressive and forage for various materials, including plant resins, mud, and specific vegetation tissues, which are essential for the maintenance and expansion of the colony.

Severe infestations can lead to the stunting of young trees, making them susceptible to secondary infections by pathogens entering through the wounds created by the bees.
