Description
The peacock mite (genus Tuckerella) is a group of plant-feeding mites belonging to the family Tuckerellidae within the order Trombidiformes. These mites are distinct due to their morphology, specifically the long, fan-like, peacock-tail-shaped setae on their posterior, which give them their common name.
The host range of Tuckerella includes various perennial woody plants. They are primarily known as pests of citrus crops, vineyards, avocado trees, and a variety of ornamental plants grown in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, causing significant concern for commercial growers.
The biology and lifecycle of these mites involve eggs, larvae, two nymphal stages (protonymph and deutonymph), and adults. They are typically found on the undersides of leaves, along the veins, and near the fruit stalks, where they can remain protected from environmental factors and chemical applications.
These pests damage plants by piercing the epidermis and sucking the internal cell contents. This feeding activity leads to chlorosis, necrotic spotting, leaf drop, and poor fruit quality. In heavy infestations, the weakening of the plant structure can lead to stunted growth and significant yield losses in agricultural production.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Tuckerella populations:
