Peacock mite

The peacock mite (Tuckerella japonica) is a destructive plant-feeding mite belonging to the family Tuckerellidae (order Trombidiformes). This pest is distinctively recognized by the presence of long, flamboyant posterior setae that resemble a peacock's tail, which serves as a primary diagnostic feature for identification under microscopic observation.

This mite is recognized as a significant pest for various citrus species and numerous ornamental plants, including tea plants and camellias. By colonizing the leaves, twigs, and fruit surfaces, the mite extracts vital plant nutrients, leading to physiological stress that compromises the overall health and developmental vigor of the host plant.

The biology of Tuckerella japonica is characterized by a multi-stage life cycle, encompassing egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult phases. These mites thrive in environments with stable temperatures and humidity, often congregating in protected areas of the plant canopy to avoid direct exposure and to facilitate continuous feeding throughout the growing season.

Infestation symptoms manifest as chlorotic spots, yellowing, and eventual necrotic lesions on the epidermis of leaves and fruit. Severe infestations lead to significant leaf drop, stunted shoot development, and a substantial reduction in fruit quality, which can cause severe economic losses in both commercial citrus orchards and ornamental nurseries.
