Peacock mite

The peacock mite (Tuckerella flabellifera) is a specialized plant pest belonging to the family Tuckerellidae within the order Trombidiformes. Its common name is derived from the distinct fan-like, peacock-tail setae located at the posterior end of its body, which makes it morphologically distinct from common spider mites.

This mite species infests a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops. Major hosts include citrus fruits, tea bushes, grapevines, and various ornamental species such as orchids and hibiscus. They typically colonize the underside of leaves, stems, and fruits, remaining stationary for long periods while feeding.

Regarding its biology, Tuckerella flabellifera thrives in stable, warm climates. The life cycle comprises egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Due to their preference for subtropical conditions, these mites can maintain continuous breeding cycles throughout the year if temperatures remain within an optimal range, leading to overlapping generations.

The damage caused by these mites is primarily due to their feeding habits, which involve piercing plant tissues and extracting cell contents. This leads to chlorosis, stunted plant growth, leaf necrosis, and premature defoliation. High levels of infestation can significantly reduce fruit quality and overall yield, making them a serious concern for commercial growers.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and intervention techniques. Growers are advised to follow these practices:

• Application of selective acaricides to target the mite populations without harming beneficial insects.
