Peacock mite

The peacock mite (Tuckerella ablutus) belongs to the Tuckerellidae family within the order Trombidiformes. These mites are named for their distinctive, long, fan-like dorsal setae that resemble the tail of a peacock. While often overlooked due to their small size, they are recognized as significant pests of specific ornamental and agricultural crops in subtropical and tropical regions.

This pest primarily infests woody plants and shrubs, with a strong preference for citrus, tea, and various exotic plants. Tuckerella ablutus typically resides on the underside of leaves, along the veins, and occasionally on the bark. By feeding on the internal contents of plant cells, they weaken the host plant and hinder its natural physiological processes.

The life cycle of the peacock mite includes the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. The development speed is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. In greenhouse conditions or tropical climates, these mites can maintain overlapping generations, leading to continuous infestations that are difficult to control without systematic intervention.

Damage caused by the peacock mite includes chlorosis, leaf discoloration, and overall stunting of new growth. As the population density increases, leaves may dry out and drop prematurely. Beyond direct mechanical injury, the feeding sites serve as infection points for various plant pathogens, further exacerbating the stress on the plant and potentially leading to crop failure if left unmanaged.
