Concave lace bug

Ulonemia concava belongs to the family Tingidae, commonly known as lace bugs, within the order Hemiptera. These insects are distinguished by their intricate, lace-like appearance of the wings and pronotum. As specialized sap-feeders, they primarily inhabit the undersides of leaves, making them difficult to spot until significant damage has already occurred to the host plant.

The host range of this pest typically includes a variety of deciduous trees and woody ornamental shrubs. Ulonemia concava thrives in environments where plants are stressed by drought or poor horticultural practices. Because they prefer sheltered positions, they can often go unnoticed in dense foliage, allowing populations to reach damaging levels before treatment is initiated.

The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis, meaning the nymphs resemble miniature, wingless versions of the adults. Overwintering occurs in the adult stage, usually in sheltered areas like bark crevices or leaf litter. As spring temperatures rise, the adults migrate to foliage to feed and lay eggs. Multiple generations can occur within a single growing season, depending on local climatic conditions.

Damage is characterized by stippling or chlorotic spots on the leaf surface, caused by the insects extracting chlorophyll and cellular contents. In severe infestations, leaves may turn yellow or brown, wither, and drop prematurely. This loss of photosynthetic capacity weakens the plant, stunts growth, and reduces its aesthetic appeal, making it more susceptible to environmental stressors and secondary diseases.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural controls involve removing and destroying fallen leaves during late autumn to reduce overwintering populations. Chemical control involves the application of systemic insecticides that target sucking insects. For organic management, horticultural oils or insecticidal soaps can be used, provided that thorough coverage of the leaf undersides is achieved.
