Systematic position. This pest belongs to the order Lepidoptera, specifically the family Crambidae (grass moths). The species is recognized for its larval stage, which acts as an aggressive defoliator, posing a threat to various legume species in agricultural and landscape environments.

Host plants. The primary hosts for Uresiphita ornithopteralis are plants within the Fabaceae (legume) family, such as lupins and acacias. While they show a strong preference for legumes, they have been observed to feed on a broader range of host plants depending on local availability and environmental conditions.

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the undersides of leaves, providing a food source immediately upon hatching. Larvae undergo several instars, feeding voraciously on foliage before pupating within silk cocoons spun amidst damaged plant tissues or in soil debris.

Feeding damage and economic impact. Larvae cause significant damage by consuming leaves, often resulting in severe defoliation of the host plant. This foliage loss compromises the plant’s ability to photosynthesize, leading to stunted growth, reduced biomass, and a substantial decrease in seed or pod production, which can cause significant economic losses.
