Urodon

Urodon is a genus of insects belonging to the family Anthribidae (fungus weevils) within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are highly specialized pests often associated with specific plant groups, particularly legumes. In an agricultural context, they are recognized as pests that primarily threaten the seed production and reproductive stages of various leguminous crops.

The pest typically infests a range of leguminous plants, including wild species and certain cultivated varieties. Their primary target is the reproductive structure of the plant, specifically buds, ovaries, and developing seeds. When populations reach high levels, these insects can cause significant damage to crop yields, severely impacting both the quality and quantity of the harvest.

The biology of Urodon is closely synchronized with the phenology of its host plants. Adult beetles typically overwinter in the soil or under plant debris. In the spring, coinciding with the budding and flowering of legumes, the beetles emerge to feed. Females lay eggs directly into the buds or developing pods, where the larvae hatch and immediately begin consuming the internal tissues of the growing seed.

Damage symptoms often include premature bud drop and the deformation of pods. Inside the pod, the larvae hollow out the seeds, leaving only empty shells or frass, which makes the affected seeds useless for sowing and severely reduces their market value. Economic damage can be particularly severe in years with weather conditions favorable for the pest's reproductive cycle, leading to high infestation rates.
