Cassava lace bug

The cassava lace bug (Vatiga illudens) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae. This insect is a specialized pest that has become widespread in regions where cassava is cultivated, particularly in South America, causing significant economic losses to commercial plantations.

The primary host crop for this pest is cassava (Manihot esculenta). The insect feeds mainly on the leaves of the plant, piercing the tissue and sucking out the cell sap. This feeding activity disrupts the plant's normal photosynthetic process and metabolic functions, weakening the overall vigor of the host plant.

The life cycle of Vatiga illudens consists of three main stages: egg, five nymphal instars, and adult. Both nymphs and adults are typically found on the underside of leaves. The duration of the life cycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity; under favorable conditions, the pest can complete several generations per year, leading to rapid population growth.

Damage is characterized by the appearance of chlorotic spots on the leaf blades, which eventually turn yellow and necrotic. In cases of severe infestation, premature leaf drop occurs. This defoliation negatively impacts the development of cassava tubers, resulting in significant yield losses and a reduction in the quality of the harvested produce.

Control measures involve a combination of strategies:

• Implementing strict crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle.
• Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of crop residues that harbor overwintering adults.
• Application of contact or systemic insecticides during heavy infestation periods.
• Utilization of biological control agents, such as entomopathogenic fungi and natural predators, to keep population densities below economic injury levels.
