The little fire ant (Wasmannia auropunctata) belongs to the Formicidae family within the Hymenoptera order. It is recognized as one of the most invasive and destructive pest species globally, capable of causing significant environmental and economic disruption by outcompeting native insect populations.
This species damages a wide range of agricultural crops, including coffee, cocoa, citrus, and various fruit trees. The ants nest in diverse habitats, such as tree canopies, rotting wood, and leaf litter, making them particularly difficult to monitor and eradicate in intensive farming systems.
The biology of Wasmannia auropunctata is defined by its polygynous social structure, with multiple queens per colony. The life cycle comprises egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Because these ants form interconnected supercolonies with high colony density, they can rapidly dominate an entire farm or ecosystem.
