Description
Systematic position. Xenaleyrodes belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aleyrodidae. These small insects are closely related to other whitefly species, functioning as significant sap-sucking pests that target a variety of agricultural and horticultural plants globally.
Affected crops. The genus is known to infest a broad range of plant species. It particularly favors tropical and subtropical fruit trees, including citrus species, alongside various ornamental plants and certain vegetables grown in controlled environments like greenhouses.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of several stages: egg, nymphal instars, puparium, and adult. Adults are characterized by wings covered in a white, powdery wax secretion. The pest thrives in warm, humid conditions, allowing it to complete multiple life cycles rapidly, leading to explosive population growth.
Damage patterns and harmfulness. By feeding on plant sap, these insects weaken the host plant, resulting in leaf yellowing, stunting, and curling. Furthermore, their honeydew secretions promote the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight, severely inhibits photosynthesis, and compromises the aesthetic and commercial quality of the plants.
Control measures. Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. This includes the use of sticky yellow traps for monitoring and mass trapping, maintaining greenhouse sanitation to limit spread, utilizing biological control agents like parasitic wasps, and applying insecticides only when monitoring indicates the population threshold has been breached.
