Cretan snail
Xerocrassa cretica
Description
The Cretan snail (Xerocrassa cretica) is a land gastropod mollusk belonging to the order Stylommatophora and the family Geomitridae. Originating from the Mediterranean basin, this species is well-adapted to dry environments but thrives in agricultural settings where irrigation and mulch create suitable microhabitats for its survival and reproduction.
This species is a generalist herbivore (polyphagous), causing damage to a wide array of crops. Its diet includes various vegetables, leafy greens, ornamental plants, and young fruit tree seedlings. In greenhouses and intensive garden systems, it can become a significant nuisance, particularly during mild, wet spring and autumn seasons.
The biology of Xerocrassa cretica is defined by its ability to undergo aestivation. During periods of heat and drought, the snails retreat into a dormant state, sealing their shells to the stems of plants, fences, or stones to conserve moisture. Once humidity increases, they resume activity, feeding aggressively and searching for mating partners in the vegetation.
The damage caused by this pest is primarily mechanical, involving the consumption of leaves, shoots, and young seedlings. This feeding activity leads to uneven holes in foliage and can cause significant economic loss by reducing the marketability of produce. Furthermore, the presence of mucus trails and feces on edible parts of the plants invites secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria.
Effective management strategies against the Cretan snail involve a combination of practices:
- Sanitation, including the removal of debris and cover where snails hide during the day.
- Maintaining optimal soil moisture to avoid creating overly damp pockets.
- Installation of physical barriers such as copper tape or crushed eggshells around susceptible plants.
- Manual collection and removal of individuals, especially after rain or irrigation.
- Application of approved molluscicides containing iron phosphate or metaldehyde when infestations reach economic thresholds.
