Xerotricha

Xerotricha is a genus of land snails belonging to the family Hygromiidae within the order Stylommatophora. These small, shelled mollusks are recognized as significant agricultural pests, particularly in regions with arid or Mediterranean climates where they thrive in specific ecological niches.

The pest targets a wide variety of crops, including leafy vegetables, cereals, legumes, and perennial orchard crops. They are particularly destructive when populations reach high densities, leading to rapid defoliation of seedlings and significant yield loss in mature plants.

The life cycle of Xerotricha is characterized by remarkable adaptability. During prolonged drought, individuals estivate, attaching themselves to plant stalks, fences, or stones to conserve moisture. With the onset of rainy weather, they resume feeding and reproductive activities, laying eggs in damp soil crevices.

Damage caused by these snails is manifested as large, irregular holes in leaves, stems, and fruits. Beyond physical destruction, their presence significantly reduces crop quality due to the accumulation of slime trails and feces, which encourages secondary fungal infections and bacterial decay.

Control strategies should focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices to minimize population growth:

• Regular cultivation and tillage of soil to disrupt egg-laying sites and expose juveniles to predators.
• Elimination of weeds and crop residues that provide essential humidity and shelter during the day.
• Application of bait-based molluscicides containing active ingredients like iron phosphate or metaldehyde when threshold levels are exceeded.
• Implementation of manual collection or physical barriers around high-value horticultural beds.
