Xerotricha conspurcata

Xerotricha conspurcata is a species of small, air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Hygromiidae. Although often overlooked, this mollusk can reach high population densities in agricultural environments, posing a significant risk to horticultural and specialty crop production.

This pest affects a wide array of crops, including vegetables, fruits, and nursery plants. It shows a strong preference for seedlings and low-growing vegetation, making it particularly damaging in commercial greenhouses and open-field vegetable production where moisture levels are maintained for crop growth.

The biology and lifecycle of Xerotricha conspurcata are largely driven by moisture availability and thermal conditions. The snails lay eggs in soil cracks or under decaying plant matter. Juvenile snails emerge and immediately begin grazing on vegetative tissues, utilizing their radula to scrape away plant epidermis, which facilitates rapid damage to young crops.

Damage symptoms include irregular holes in leaves, stems, and delicate fruits. The presence of mucus trails and fecal matter is a diagnostic sign of their activity. Beyond direct mechanical damage, the slime trails provide a substrate for secondary fungal infections, which further degrade the quality and marketability of the affected agricultural produce.

Control strategies should focus on integrated pest management (IPM). Cultural practices such as maintaining clear rows, removing excessive organic debris, and implementing precise irrigation to reduce surface moisture are critical. If populations exceed economic thresholds, the application of targeted molluscicides and the use of physical barriers or traps are effective methods to mitigate crop loss.
