Carpenter bee

The carpenter bee (Xylocopa) is a solitary insect belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Apidae. Known for their large, robust bodies, they often appear as shiny black, metallic-colored insects. While they are valuable pollinators in natural ecosystems, in agricultural or residential settings, they are considered structural pests due to their habit of nesting in wooden structures.

These insects primarily target unpainted or weathered wood. Common structures damaged by Xylocopa include support beams, wooden poles for trellises, fences, siding, and porch furniture. They prefer softwoods such as cedar, cypress, pine, or redwood, but may also attack hardwoods if the wood is adequately exposed and vulnerable.

The biological cycle begins in the spring when females excavate tunnels into wood. Unlike termites, they do not eat wood; they simply remove it to create nesting chambers. A single female digs a primary tunnel and partitions it into several cells, where she provides a pollen ball for each larva. After the larvae develop and pupate, the new generation emerges in late summer to overwinter in existing tunnels.

The damage is characterized by clean, perfectly round holes approximately 1 cm in diameter, leading into extensive tunnels. Over several seasons, multiple generations of bees can use the same tunnel system, causing cumulative structural damage. This weakens wooden members, potentially leading to the failure of support structures and attracting secondary wood-destroying fungi or other pests.

Management and prevention strategies are essential to mitigate wood degradation:

• Painting or staining wood surfaces, as carpenter bees prefer raw, weathered timber.
• Sealing existing holes with wood putty, dowels, or steel wool to prevent re-colonization.
• Installing physical barriers like metal flashing on exposed edges of wooden structures.
• Applying residual insecticides directly into active nesting holes during the spring season to control the population.
