Violet carpenter bee

The violet carpenter bee (Xylocopa violacea) is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Apidae family. This large, robust bee is characterized by its iridescent dark violet-black wings and shiny black body. As a solitary species, it does not rely on hive communication, which often leads to multiple individuals nesting independently in the same wooden area.

While these bees are not plant pests in terms of feeding on crops, they are considered significant structural pests. They are known for their ability to bore into dry, seasoned wood. Garden structures like fences, trellises, wooden sheds, and untreated exterior timber are primary targets for their nesting activities, leading to long-term degradation of property.

The biology of Xylocopa violacea is driven by the need for a protected environment for larval development. In the spring, the female excavates a gallery in the wood, creating a series of individual cells separated by walls made of wood pulp and saliva. The bee supplies each cell with a mixture of pollen and nectar before laying an egg, allowing the larvae to develop safely inside the wood structure.

The damage caused by these insects is structural. The tunnels created are perfectly round and about 10-15 mm in diameter. Over several seasons, if the wood is not treated or repaired, the accumulation of these galleries can weaken timber beams, rafters, and posts. This compromises the stability of structures, especially those that are load-bearing, leading to costly maintenance or structural failure.

Control and protection measures focus on exclusion and physical deterrence:

• Applying coats of paint, varnish, or wood stains to make the surface unattractive or too difficult to penetrate.
• Sealing existing holes with steel wool and wood putty to prevent further colonization.
• Covering exposed wooden surfaces with metal screening or cladding in high-risk areas.
• Using pressure-treated lumber for new garden construction projects.
