Description
Systematic position: Zaprionus indianus belongs to the order Diptera and the family Drosophilidae. Widely known as the African fig fly, this species is considered a significant invasive pest in many fruit-growing regions across the globe, characterized by its high reproductive rate and adaptability.
Affected crops: This pest is highly polyphagous, attacking a wide range of soft-skinned fruits. Key hosts include figs, grapes, peaches, nectarines, citrus fruits, apples, pears, and tomatoes. It is particularly attracted to ripening or slightly damaged fruit on both trees and vines.
Biology and life cycle: The insect's life cycle is remarkably short, often completing from egg to adult in under two weeks under favorable temperatures. Females possess a specialized ovipositor that allows them to pierce the skin of fruits and deposit eggs directly into the tissue. This rapid generation turnover makes the pest difficult to control once established.
Nature of damage: The primary damage is caused by larvae feeding on the internal pulp of the fruit, rendering it a mushy, inedible mess. Furthermore, the entry wounds created by the adults or larvae act as infection courts for various secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens, leading to rapid rot and loss of total yield.
Control measures: Management of this pest requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to be effective. Key strategies include:
- Deployment of food-based bait traps for monitoring population peaks.
- Rigorous sanitation by collecting and burying or destroying fallen fruit to eliminate breeding sites.
