Zaprionus ghesquierei is a species of vinegar fly belonging to the family Drosophilidae, order Diptera. Similar to its close relative, the spotted-wing drosophila, this pest poses a significant threat to horticultural crops worldwide, particularly in warmer climates where it can thrive throughout the growing season.

This fly species targets a wide range of fruit and vegetable crops. It is particularly attracted to ripening and ripe fruits with thin skins. Crops such as grapes, various berries, and stone fruits are highly susceptible to infestation. Because the fly can penetrate the fruit skin directly, it can attack healthy, undamaged crops, unlike many other fruit-attacking insects.

The biology of the pest is defined by rapid development and high reproductive capacity. A single female can deposit a large number of eggs directly into the flesh of the fruit. The larvae hatch quickly and tunnel through the pulp, causing rapid tissue degradation and internal rotting. The entire life cycle, from egg to adult, is completed in a very short time, facilitating exponential population growth.

These entry points become focal points for secondary infections such as yeasts and molds, leading to premature fruit drop and total spoilage.
