Mascarene fruit fly

The Mascarene fruit fly (Zaprionus mascariensis) is a member of the order Diptera and the Drosophilidae family. As an invasive pest species, it has gained significant attention in agricultural science due to its potential to cause severe economic damage to fruit production and its ability to establish populations in diverse climatic zones.

The pest targets a wide variety of commercial crops. Key hosts include figs, grapes, citrus fruits, peaches, and various berries. In some regions, it also causes significant damage to tomatoes, making it a generalist feeder that poses a constant threat to horticultural stability throughout the growing season.

The biology of Zaprionus mascariensis is defined by its rapid reproductive rate. Females use a sclerotized ovipositor to pierce the skin of fruits and lay eggs directly into the tissue. The larvae hatch inside the fruit and begin feeding on the flesh, which triggers premature decay and renders the produce unmarketable in a matter of days.

Damage symptoms usually appear as small, puncture-like wounds on the skin of the fruit, often accompanied by dark, soft spots where secondary infections by fungi and bacteria take hold. The pest is particularly dangerous because it can infest ripening fruit shortly before harvest, leaving little time for traditional chemical control interventions.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control of this insect. Recommended strategies include:
