Description
Systematic position. Zaprionus vittiger (family Drosophilidae, order Diptera) is a species of vinegar fly that has recently gained status as a serious agricultural pest. Unlike many related species, this pest has the ability to damage fruit with intact skin, which makes it extremely dangerous for commercial fruit growing and horticulture.
Host plants. The fly demonstrates broad polyphagy. Both wild and cultivated plants fall into the risk zone. The greatest damage is recorded on grapes, figs, peaches, nectarines, citrus fruits, and strawberries. Infestation of tomatoes and other vegetable crops during their ripening phase has also been observed.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the insect strongly depends on temperature conditions, with 20 to 25 degrees Celsius considered optimal. Females use a sharp ovipositor to pierce the skin of the fruit, laying eggs inside the flesh. Larvae develop rapidly, feeding on fruit tissues, which leads to rapid decay and secondary infection by fungal pathogens.
Nature of damage and economic importance. Externally, the damage looks like small indentations with pinpoint holes, often accompanied by tissue softening. Inside the fruit, larvae create tunnels, turning the flesh into a mushy mass. In cases of mass outbreaks, this pest can destroy 80-100% of the harvest in orchards that are not treated with timely chemical measures.
Control measures. Fighting this pest requires an integrated approach:
- Installation of pheromone and food-based traps to monitor adult population levels.
- Timely collection and destruction of fallen fruit, where larval development continues.
- Application of approved insecticides during the active ripening period if economic injury thresholds are exceeded.
- Adherence to strict quarantine measures during the movement of planting material and fresh produce.
