Zicrona

Zicrona (Zicrona caerulea) is a genus of shield bugs belonging to the family Pentatomidae. While scientifically recognized as an omnivorous predator that helps manage other pests, it can occasionally exhibit phytophagous behavior. In commercial agriculture and horticulture, this behavior classifies it as a potential pest that requires monitoring and management.

The pest primarily targets vegetable crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants, as well as several berry-producing bushes like currants. Young plants are particularly vulnerable, as the feeding activities of Zicrona during critical growth stages can significantly stunt their development and reduce the overall yield potential of the crop.

The life cycle of the Zicrona bug consists of an egg stage, five nymph instars, and an adult phase. Adults are easily identifiable due to their distinctive metallic blue or blue-green coloration. They typically overwinter as adults in protected environments like leaf litter, soil crevices, or garden debris, emerging to feed and mate as soon as spring temperatures rise.

The damage caused by Zicrona manifests as necrotic spots or stunted growth on the plant's succulent parts due to the loss of cell sap. By puncturing the epidermis of leaves and stems, the bug disrupts normal plant metabolism. These injuries are often exacerbated during dry weather when the bugs are more likely to seek water sources within plant tissues.
