The Elegant grasshopper (Zonocerus elegans) is a member of the order Orthoptera and the family Pyrgomorphidae. Native to Sub-Saharan Africa, this species is well-known for its striking coloration and its role as a destructive agricultural pest capable of causing extensive economic damage to various crops across the continent.
As a polyphagous insect, Zonocerus elegans feeds on a wide array of host plants. Key agricultural targets include cassava, cotton, coffee, citrus, and various legumes. During outbreaks, the sheer density of these grasshoppers allows them to strip vegetation bare, leading to total crop failure in susceptible fields if not properly managed.
The biology of this species is highly synchronized with environmental conditions. Eggs are typically laid in the soil in clusters, where they remain in diapause until the onset of favorable moisture levels. The nymphs progress through several developmental stages (instars) before reaching maturity, displaying gregarious behavior that increases their impact on local vegetation.
