Adoxophyes orana granulovirus strain BV-0001

Description

Adoxophyes orana granulovirus (GV) strain BV-0001 is a highly specific biological insecticide used for the control of summer fruit tortrix moth (Adoxophyes orana) larvae. This active substance belongs to the baculovirus group, which acts as a pathogen that specifically targets the lepidopteran larvae responsible for significant damage in pome fruit orchards.

The mechanism of action is highly specific: the larvae ingest the virus particles while feeding on treated plant tissues. Once inside the insect's midgut, the alkaline environment dissolves the viral occlusion bodies, releasing the virions. These virions then infect the gut cells and rapidly spread through the body, causing systemic infection, cessation of feeding within hours, and eventual mortality of the larvae.

This biological agent is primarily used in pome fruit production, specifically on apples and pears, to target multiple generations of the summer fruit tortrix. Its selective nature ensures that beneficial insects, such as pollinators and predatory mites, remain unaffected, making it a critical component of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and organic fruit farming practices.

Application timing is crucial for success with Adoxophyes orana GV; treatments should be performed when neonate larvae are actively hatching and before they penetrate the fruit or leaf tissue. Since the virus particles are susceptible to UV degradation, applications are ideally conducted during the late afternoon or evening to maximize the residual activity of the product on the foliage.

Safety precautions for handling this product are minimal due to its non-toxic nature toward mammals and non-target organisms. However, operators should follow standard agricultural safety protocols, including wearing basic protective gear to prevent skin and eye contact. The product does not leave harmful chemical residues on harvested fruits, allowing for flexible application schedules close to the harvest period.

  • Highly targeted control that protects beneficial biodiversity.
  • No chemical residues, perfect for organic farming standards.
  • Prevents the development of resistance in leafroller populations.
  • Compatible with most conventional pesticides for tank mixing.
