Amidosulfuron

Description

Amidosulfuron is an active substance belonging to the sulfonylurea chemical class, widely recognized for its selective, systemic herbicidal properties. It is primarily formulated for post-emergence control of a broad spectrum of broad-leaved weeds in agricultural crop production.

The mode of action of amidosulfuron involves the inhibition of the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme, which is critical for the biosynthesis of essential branched-chain amino acids such as leucine, isoleucine, and valine. By disrupting this pathway, the chemical effectively halts cellular division in weed tissues, leading to rapid growth cessation and eventual necrosis.

This herbicide is registered for use in cereal crops, including winter and spring wheat, barley, rye, and oats. It is particularly valued for its control of difficult-to-manage weeds, such as Galium aparine (cleavers), various species of chamomile, and other common agricultural weeds that compete for nutrients and light.

Regarding application, amidosulfuron is absorbed rapidly through the foliage and translocated within the plant via both the xylem and phloem. Optimal results are obtained when weeds are in the early growth stages (2–4 leaf phase). Its activity is generally independent of soil moisture levels, which allows for consistent performance across various seasonal conditions.

Safety precautions are vital due to the high biological activity of the compound. Operators must prevent spray drift onto sensitive neighboring crops like sugar beets or oilseed rape. Furthermore, equipment decontamination procedures must be strictly followed after application to prevent cross-contamination, and personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory during handling.

  • High selectivity for cereal crops.
  • Excellent performance against Galium aparine.
  • Rapid uptake and systemic distribution.
  • Effective across varying weather conditions.
