Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. tenebrionis strain NB176
Description
Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. tenebrionis (Btt) strain NB176 is a specialized biological insecticide derived from a specific soil bacterium. It functions by synthesizing crystalline proteins (Cry-toxins) that exhibit potent insecticidal activity against larvae and adults of various beetle species, particularly those in the Chrysomelidae family.
The mechanism of action is highly specific: after ingestion by the target pest, the alkaline conditions of the insect's midgut solubilize the protoxins. These activated toxins bind to specific receptors in the gut lining, leading to pore formation, disruption of osmotic balance, and death of the insect due to septicaemia and starvation within a few days.
This biological agent is widely utilized on crops such as potatoes, eggplants, and tomatoes to control the Colorado potato beetle. Its primary advantage is its selective target range, which leaves non-target organisms, including beneficial pollinators and natural predators, unaffected, thereby maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.
Application techniques require uniform coverage of the plant foliage, as the insecticide must be ingested by the target larvae to be effective. For optimal control, it is advised to apply the product during the early larval stages, as younger larvae are significantly more susceptible to the endotoxins produced by the NB176 strain.
- Highly selective action against Coleoptera pests.
- Environmentally friendly with no residues on harvested crops.
- Compatible with integrated pest management (IPM) programs.
- No documented resistance development in target populations.
Users should follow standard safety protocols during application, wearing protective clothing to avoid irritation. Proper storage is critical; the product should be kept in a cool, dark location to maintain the viability of the bacterial spores. Always verify the local registration and specific application rates per hectare for your target crop.
