Potato tuber moth granulovirus

Betabaculovirus phoperculellae is a highly specific insect virus belonging to the Baculoviridae family. It serves as a biological insecticide used primarily for the management of the potato tuber moth (Phthorimaea operculella), a devastating pest that attacks plants within the Solanaceae family, such as potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants.

The mechanism of action is highly specific: once the larvae ingest the virus via treated plant foliage or tubers, the viral occlusion bodies are dissolved in the alkaline gut environment of the insect. The released virions subsequently infect the host's cells, causing rapid viral replication that eventually kills the larva, effectively halting the pest population growth.

This agent is primarily deployed in agricultural settings for field crops and, significantly, for post-harvest protection of stored potato tubers. By applying the granulovirus, farmers can prevent the larvae from boring into the potato flesh, which is the primary cause of both direct loss and secondary infections like rots.

Key application features include the necessity for precise timing. The treatment must be applied while larvae are small, as they need to consume the virus to become infected. Due to its biological nature, it does not provide an immediate knockdown effect, but it offers long-term suppression of the pest population without leaving toxic residues on the harvest.

Safety precautions for the use of this biological agent are minimal compared to chemical pesticides, as it is non-toxic to humans, mammals, and beneficial predatory insects. However, it is essential to store the product correctly, away from direct sunlight and extreme heat, to ensure that the viral particles remain stable and fully potent until the time of application.
