Calcium chloride

Description

Calcium chloride is an inorganic compound widely utilized in agriculture primarily as a nutritional supplement rather than a traditional pesticide. It plays a crucial role in maintaining plant health by addressing mineral deficiencies that lead to physiological disorders, specifically impacting fruit development and shelf life.

The mechanism of action involves supplying readily available calcium ions to the plant's vascular system. Calcium is an essential structural component of cell walls and membranes, acting as a cement that holds cells together. By increasing the calcium content in fruit tissues, the structural integrity of the cell wall is fortified, making the produce less susceptible to breakdown.

This compound is extensively used in orchard management, particularly for apple and pear production, to prevent physiological disorders such as bitter pit. Furthermore, it is applied to stone fruits and vegetables like tomatoes to reduce skin cracking, which occurs due to rapid growth or fluctuations in soil moisture levels.

Application practices focus on foliar spraying during the critical growth stages of the fruit. Growers must ensure precision in concentration, as excessive rates can lead to phytotoxicity and foliage burns. It is recommended to perform treatments during cooler hours of the day to ensure slow absorption and prevent evaporation stress.

Safety precautions are necessary when handling calcium chloride, as the powder or concentrated solution can cause irritation to the eyes and skin. It is also advised not to combine it with incompatible pesticides or fertilizers, particularly those containing phosphates or sulfates, to prevent chemical precipitation and ensure the product remains effective.
