Active ingredient

Cartap

Description

Cartap is an active ingredient classified within the nereistoxin derivative chemical group. It serves exclusively as an insecticide in integrated pest management systems. This substance is widely valued by agronomists for its unique mode of action, which is distinct from many common synthetic pyrethroids or organophosphates, helping to manage resistance in pest populations.

The mechanism of action involves blocking the transmission of nerve impulses by acting as an antagonist to acetylcholine. Once the pest ingests or comes into contact with the substance, it causes rapid muscular paralysis. This immediate cessation of feeding protects the crop from further damage while the insect subsequently dies from starvation or physiological failure.

Cartap is effectively utilized on a diverse array of crops, including potatoes, rice, vegetables, and fruit orchards. Its application is particularly successful against lepidopterous larvae, leafminers, and coleopteran pests like the Colorado potato beetle. It is best applied when pest monitoring shows the onset of larval hatching to maximize the product’s efficacy.

Operational features include the necessity for precise application timing and proper coverage. While cartap has systemic movement, achieving good distribution across the leaf surface is crucial for initial contact. It is advised to avoid applying the substance during peak heat hours, as high temperatures can influence the stability and uptake of the product within the plant tissues.

Precautionary measures are essential for the safe use of cartap. It is classified as moderately toxic, necessitating the use of full protective equipment, including gloves and respirators during mixing and application. Furthermore, strict environmental stewardship must be practiced to prevent runoff into aquatic ecosystems, as cartap poses a significant toxicity risk to fish and other aquatic organisms.
