Active ingredient

Chlorsulfuron

Description

Chlorsulfuron is a potent systemic herbicide belonging to the sulfonylurea chemical class. It is widely recognized for its high herbicidal activity at extremely low application rates, making it an efficient choice for managing broad-leaved weeds in cereal crops. It acts as a foundational tool for weed control programs, particularly in intensive agricultural systems.

The primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme in target plants. This inhibition halts the biosynthesis of essential amino acids, specifically valine, leucine, and isoleucine, which effectively causes the cessation of cell division. Consequently, susceptible weeds stop growing almost immediately after treatment, leading to systemic death within a few weeks.

This substance is specifically used in wheat and barley cultivation to control a wide range of broad-leaved weeds, such as shepherd’s purse, chickweed, and various cruciferous species. Because it can be absorbed through both the foliage and the root system, it provides a residual effect that can help manage late-emerging weeds, significantly improving the yield potential of the crop.

One of the critical factors in using chlorsulfuron is its potential residual activity in the soil. Farmers must be aware of crop rotation restrictions, as residues can adversely affect sensitive follow-up crops like sugar beets, sunflowers, or certain pulses. Proper soil management and adherence to recommended waiting intervals before planting sensitive crops are essential for successful field management.

Safety and handling procedures must be strictly followed when using chlorsulfuron-based products. Applicators should always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) to minimize skin and eye contact. To prevent damage to non-target vegetation, applications should be carried out under favorable wind conditions, and all environmental guidelines regarding runoff and water contamination must be strictly respected.
