Chlorsulfuron is a potent systemic herbicide belonging to the sulfonylurea chemical class. The primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme in target plants. This inhibition halts the biosynthesis of essential amino acids, specifically valine, leucine, and isoleucine, which effectively causes the cessation of cell division. Consequently, susceptible weeds stop growing almost immediately after treatment, leading to systemic death within a few weeks.

This substance is specifically used in wheat and barley cultivation to control a wide range of broad-leaved weeds, such as shepherd’s purse, chickweed, and various cruciferous species. Because it can be absorbed through both the foliage and the root system, it provides a residual effect that can help manage late-emerging weeds, significantly improving the yield potential of the crop.
