Cyclanilide
Description
Cyclanilide is a potent chemical compound classified as a cyclopropanecarboxamide. In professional agriculture, it is primarily employed as a plant growth regulator and a highly effective defoliant. Its main purpose is to facilitate crop harvesting by accelerating the plant senescence process and inducing leaf abscission in various industrial crops.
The primary mechanism of action of cyclanilide involves the inhibition of auxin synthesis and transport within the plant tissues. By interfering with these phytohormones, the substance promotes the development of an abscission layer at the base of leaf petioles. This biological response leads to controlled leaf drop while maintaining the integrity and quality of the crop yield, preventing premature decay or damage.
Cyclanilide is most widely used in cotton cultivation. It acts as an essential tool for defoliation, enabling growers to strip the cotton plant of its foliage before mechanical harvesting. By clearing the leaves, the risk of trash contamination in the harvested cotton fiber is minimized, and the operational efficiency of harvesting machinery is significantly enhanced.
In field practice, cyclanilide is often formulated in combination with other active ingredients, most notably ethephon. This synergy improves the defoliation consistency, particularly under fluctuating or suboptimal environmental conditions. Effective application requires precise timing, usually linked to the maturity stage of the crop, to maximize the success of the defoliation program.
Safety and handling are critical when working with cyclanilide. Operators must use appropriate personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection and chemical-resistant gloves, to avoid direct exposure. Due to its biological activity, it is vital to prevent drift into non-target areas and strictly adhere to the recommended waiting intervals between application and harvest to ensure food safety and environmental compliance.
