Description
Cyhalofop-butyl belongs to the aryloxyphenoxypropionate chemical class and serves as a selective, post-emergence systemic herbicide. It is specifically designed to provide high-level control of grass weeds in rice crops, ensuring that the primary crop can develop without competition for vital nutrients and space.
The mechanism of action for this compound involves the inhibition of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) in sensitive grass species. By stopping the production of fatty acids essential for cell membrane structure, the herbicide effectively shuts down the meristematic activity in weed tissues, leading to chlorosis, necrosis, and eventual plant death.
It is primarily registered for use in rice cultivation. It is highly effective against major grass weeds such as Echinochloa species (barnyard grass). Because of its unique selectivity, rice plants can metabolize the compound into non-toxic substances, allowing for effective weed management without harming the crop yield.
When applying the product, timing is a critical factor for success. It should be applied when the weeds are in the active growth stage, ideally between the 2-leaf and 5-leaf growth stages. Proper irrigation management in rice paddies is often necessary to maximize the contact of the product with the target weeds.
Safety precautions are essential when handling Cyhalofop-butyl. Operators must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to avoid inhalation or skin contact. Furthermore, it is important to prevent spray drift into non-target areas and to follow local environmental regulations regarding container disposal and buffer zone maintenance near water bodies.
