Active ingredient

Diafenthiuron

Description

Diafenthiuron is a highly effective active ingredient belonging to the thiourea chemical class. It is widely used in modern agriculture as an insecticide and acaricide with contact, stomach, and fumigant activity. This substance is particularly valuable due to its unique ability to manage pests that have developed resistance to traditional organophosphate or pyrethroid treatments.

The mode of action of diafenthiuron involves its conversion into an active form within the insect's body. Once activated, it inhibits the mitochondrial ATP-synthase enzyme. This disruption halts the energy production (ATP) within the pest's cells, leading to rapid paralysis, cessation of feeding, and eventually death. This bio-energetic mechanism ensures high mortality rates even in resistant populations.

This active substance is commonly applied to a variety of crops, including vegetables such as tomatoes and cucumbers, as well as cotton and ornamental plants. It is highly regarded for its efficacy in controlling whiteflies (Aleyrodidae), spider mites, aphids, thrips, and certain lepidopteran larvae, making it a staple in integrated pest management programs.

A significant technical advantage of diafenthiuron is its translaminar action. The chemical is absorbed into the leaf tissue, allowing it to reach pests hidden on the undersides of leaves, which are often untouched by contact-only sprays. Furthermore, it exhibits ovicidal activity, meaning it can kill the eggs of pests, preventing the emergence of new generations.

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Avoid spraying in windy conditions to prevent drift.
  • Ensure adequate buffer zones near aquatic environments.
  • Follow pre-harvest interval (PHI) guidelines strictly.

Despite its efficiency, diafenthiuron requires careful handling. It is classified as moderately toxic and poses risks to aquatic organisms. Therefore, application strategies must prioritize environmental protection by avoiding runoff into water bodies. Farmers should always follow the specific label instructions regarding dosage and frequency to maximize efficacy while ensuring user safety and environmental sustainability.
